By National Writing Project

The National Writing Project (NWP) is a network of sites anchored at colleges and universities and serves teachers across disciplines, from early childhood through university. They provide professional development, develop resources, generate research, and act on knowledge to improve the teaching of writing. NWP sites share a set of principles and practices for teachers’ professional development. In addition to developing a leadership cadre of local teachers (called “teacher-consultants”) through invitational summer institutes, NWP sites design and deliver customized in-service programs for local schools, districts, and higher education institutions, and provide a diverse array of continuing education and research opportunities for teachers.
Co-directed by faculty from the local university and from K–12 schools, approximately 175 local sites serve the country

  1. Find a writing project near you. Reach out. Apply to join their invitational institute, or inquire about professional development services. Connect with leading writing instructors from your area.
  2. Sign up for our newsletter. You’ll receive monthly updates about the latest news from NWP teachers classrooms, new resources for teachers, and upcoming NWP events.
  3. Use our resources. You can visit NWP’s Knowledge Base to find a wealth of resources created by teachers in the network and used in their own classrooms or in professional development. For instance, follow this link to learn about NWP’s College, Career, and Community Writers Project (C3WP) ​
